Maggie Long, owner of Mushroom Maggie’s Farm in St. Francisville, faced multiple setbacks, including a barn fire that injured her husband and the financial strain brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Being a farmer is not easy,” she said. “We had to rebuild more than once, and it has been a constant effort to keep moving forward.”
Programs that support local food systems have also played a role in recovery. SNAP matching initiatives at farmers markets help increase access to fresh food while supporting local growers.
“The SNAP match program has been a tremendous help,” Long said. “Customers are able to get more food, and it also supports farmers directly.” In addition to economic support, access to healthcare services has been essential for her family, including care for her son’s developmental needs.
“Having that support made a real difference for our family,” she added. In Ponchatoula, fifth-generation strawberry farmer William Fletcher faced similar challenges after severe flooding impacted his farm and income.
“Having reliable healthcare gave us peace of mind,” Fletcher said. “Knowing our family would be taken care of allowed us to focus on rebuilding.”
He also noted the importance of personalized support and connection throughout the process.
“We were really impressed with the level of care and attention we received,” he said. “That support meant a lot as we worked to get back on our feet.”
