Supporting Providers in Improving Maternal Health Outcomes Across Louisiana

Healthcare providers across Louisiana are receiving additional support and training to help improve maternal health outcomes, with a focus on prenatal care and syphilis screening.

In partnership with the Louisiana Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, a provider education session will take place on October 29 as part of an ongoing “Lunch and Learn” series. The session focuses on strengthening clinical practices related to prenatal care and early detection of syphilis during pregnancy.

Louisiana currently has one of the highest rates of congenital syphilis in the country, according to the Louisiana Department of Health. When left untreated during pregnancy, syphilis can lead to serious complications, including stillbirth, infant death, or long-term health challenges for the child. Early screening and treatment are critical to preventing these outcomes.

“These peer-to-peer sessions address the real-world challenges Louisiana providers face every day in their practices,” said Dr. Dana Lawson, Senior Vice President of Population Health and Clinical Operations at Louisiana Healthcare Connections. “By sharing practical solutions and clinical insights, we strengthen providers’ ability to deliver high-quality care and improve outcomes for the communities we serve.”

The “Lunch and Learn” series brings together healthcare professionals from across the state to share expertise, discuss emerging health challenges, and explore best practices in patient care. Sessions may qualify for continuing education credits for physicians, nurses, and social workers, depending on accreditation.

By equipping providers with the latest knowledge and tools, these efforts help strengthen care delivery and support healthier outcomes for mothers and babies across Louisiana.
