As hurricane season begins along the Gulf Coast, families across Louisiana are being encouraged to take steps now to prepare for potential disruptions to their health and medical care.
Hurricane season runs from June through November, bringing risks that can impact access to doctors, medications, and medical supplies. Preparing in advance is especially important for individuals with chronic conditions, disabilities, or ongoing healthcare needs.
“Hurricanes can disrupt access to care, medications, and medical supplies,” said Dr. Stewart Gordon, Chief Medical Officer of Louisiana Healthcare Connections. “We urge families to start their medical preparations early so they can stay safe and healthy during a storm.”
Simple steps can make a significant difference in ensuring continuity of care during severe weather. Key recommendations include:
- Prepare medications in advance
- Keep an updated list of prescriptions, including dosages and instructions, and store it in an emergency kit.
- Safeguard medical information and ID cards
- Store copies of health insurance cards, medical records, and medication lists in a waterproof and easy-to-access location.
- Ensure medical device readiness
- Fully charge any powered medical devices and prepare backup power options if possible.
- Register for medical needs support
- Individuals who require additional assistance during emergencies should pre-register with their parish Office of Emergency Preparedness.
- Update contact information
Make sure healthcare providers and health plans have current phone numbers and addresses on file.
In addition to these steps, systems are in place to help maintain access to care during emergencies, including tools that identify service disruptions and connect individuals to available providers and pharmacies.
“Hurricanes do not just impact homes. They can interrupt access to care and essential medications,” said Jamie Schlottman, CEO and Plan President of Louisiana Healthcare Connections. “Having a plan in place helps families protect their health before, during, and after a storm.”
Families are encouraged to review their emergency plans, build or update their emergency kits, and stay informed throughout the season to ensure they are prepared for whatever may come.
