Residents across Louisiana are being encouraged to take a step toward better health by participating in the Great American Smokeout, an annual event held on the third Thursday of November. The initiative, led by the American Cancer Society, supports individuals who are ready to quit smoking and begin working toward a smoke-free future. Smoking remains the leading cause of preventable death in the United States and is linked to serious health conditions such as heart disease, stroke, and cancer.
In Louisiana, tobacco use continues to impact communities across the state, with higher rates of tobacco-related illness among vulnerable populations and growing use among youth.
“Quitting smoking is one of the best things you can do for your health, and we are here to support every step of that journey,” said Dr. Stewart Gordon, Chief Medical Officer of Louisiana Healthcare Connections. “The Great American Smokeout offers a powerful opportunity to start fresh and access the tools needed for success.”
A range of free resources is available to support individuals who are ready to quit:
- Nicotine replacement therapy
Patches, gum, or lozenges may be available through an in-network provider. - Digital and app-based tools
Programs like Craving to Quit offer structured guidance and support throughout the quitting process, along with incentives for participation. Additional resources are available for pregnant members through specialized maternal health programs. - Text-based support
Programs such as This is Quitting provide ongoing motivation and encouragement through text messaging.
Support is available to Louisiana residents age 13 and older, regardless of health plan membership, making it easier for individuals to access the help they need. Residents are encouraged to connect with their healthcare provider or access statewide resources such as the Louisiana Tobacco Quitline at 1-800-QUIT-NOW or online at quitwithusla.org. Participating in the Great American Smokeout by committing to quit for one day can be a meaningful first step toward long-term success and improved health.
